Our Initiative

ICBC has started this initiative by supporting the work being done by Sankurathri Foundation that was established by Dr. Chandrasekhar Sankurathri in 1989 to provide much needed services to the rural poor in Andhra Pradesh. Dr. Chandrasekhar’s family, his wife Manjari, son Srikiran and daughter Sarada perished tragically when terrorists exploded Air India flight 182 en route from Canada to Delhi on June 23, 1985.

He has committed his time and resources towards developing the poor communities of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh through providing education by setting a school and an eye hospital to provide affordable and accessible eye care. More details are on their website www.sankurathri.org

About Dr. Chandrasekhar:

Following the loss of his family in the Kanishka Bombing of Air India Flight 182 he resigned his job in Canada and returned to India in 1988 to dedicate his life to serve the poor in rural areas near Kakinada, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. He has won many awards in Canada and USA for conducting humanitarian work.

He was named as Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation, USA for his humanitarian work. A special distinction given to a non-Rotarian.

Several newspapers, magazines and radio and television broadcasts in Canada, India and USA acknowledging his efforts to eradicate illiteracy and blindness in rural India. A few quotes:
“Out of tragedy, a sense of purpose” described in detail by Mr. John Stackhouse, The Globe and mail, Toronto-23rd June 1998. “Life after Air-India tragedy” describes in detail about the transformation of the individual to serve the needy in India.
