19th January, 2012: Launch of “Third Thursday at the Taj”
DRC had its first “Third Thursday at the Taj” on, 19th January 2012, from 6.30 pm to 8:00 pm, at Ricks, Hotel Taj Mahal, Mansingh Road, New Delhi!

This launch was attended by H.E. Stewart Beck, High Commissioner, Ms. Sara Wilshaw, Minister (Commercial) and India Trade Program Manager, and Mr. Simon Cridland, Head, Advocacy Programme from the Canadian High Commission.

The evening, turned out to be a great success. The ambience at the ‘Ricks’ was just the right setting for a wonderful networking evening, where our members could relax and have a good time

Indo-Canadian Business Chamber (ICBC) in association with Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organized a Session on “India – Canada Partnership: The Way Forward” on 6th January 2012, 1100 hrs at Hotel The Lalit, Barakhamba Avenue, New Delhi. Mr. Virbhadra Singh, Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, H.E. Stewart Beck, High Commissioner, Canadian High Commission, Mr. Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham, Ontario, Mr. Jawed Ashraf, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, Mr. Anup Wadhawan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Chief Negotiator, CEPA on Canada addressed the participants. ICBC hosted at Club Canada, Canadian High Commission, New Delhi a welcome reception in Honor of the New Canadian High Commissioner (designate) His Excellency Mr. Stewart Beck. The High Commissioner was introduced by Mr. Mario St. Marie, Minister (Commercial) and Programme Manager (India). At this welcome reception the High Commissioner shared his vision of seeing the India Canada trade and relationship growing 3 times more than it has. He said he is very confident that this could be achieved. Mr. Arun Pandeya, President of ICBC shared the vision and road map of ICBC going forward. Ms. Ritika Modi, Chairperson of Northern Chapter of ICBC felicitated the High Commissioner on behalf of the Board and Members of ICBC. The formal part of the evening ended at the right note by a brief presentation on the success story of Bombardier in India by Mr. Rajeev Jyoti, President & Managing Director; Chief Country representative, which is one of Canada’s success stories in India.

ICBC invited to Pre Departure Orientation for students leaving for Canada Ms. Hazel Siromoni, CEO, ICBC was invited as the chief guest along with the Head of Advocacy department Mr. Simon Cridland, Canadian High Commission to address a small group of 40-50 Indian students heading to Canada to pursue their post secondary education in some of the finest Universities and Colleges. She addressed the students on student life in Canada as well as on the expectations from the industry across various sectors.

“Canada-India Seminar on Business/Immigrant Entrepreneurship in partnership with Indo Canadian Business Chamber” on June 8th at Hyatt Regency Hotel, New Delhi with Government of Saskatchewan The Objective of the seminar was to orient Companies, multinationals, individuals on opportunities of doing business and long term opportunity of considering making Saskatchewan their home.

Followed by welcome by Ms. Hazel Siromoni, CEO, ICBC Mr. Mark Strasser, Acting Manager, Canadian High Commission shared about the various areas of interest of engagement Canada has with India and has an ambitious plan to grow this further.

His opening remarks were followed by the Honorable Minister Mr. Rob Norris presentation which also had a video telecast of a Message from the Premier of Saskatchewan Mr.Brad Wall who shared about the rich resources of Saskatchewan along with very High technological advancements. Honorable minister shared that 80% of Canada’s uranium is in Saskatchewan. Among the top 10 cities rated to live in Canada, 5 of them are in Saskatchewan. Honorable minister also shared that Saskatchewan had the lowest unemployment rate in the country. He shared a few success stories of Indians who made Saskatchewan their home, work place and have had some incredible experiences to share.

Honorable Minister then invited the Assistant Deputy Minister of Immigration Mr. Rupen Pandya to share various opportunities of making Saskatchewan home. He detailed the process, incentives and opportunities.

There was a brief time of Q/A followed by Hi Tea buffet hosted by Government of Saskatchewan.

Before everybody broke away to meet, greet and interact, Mr. Arun Pandeya, President of ICBC in his concluding remarks offered ICBC as a platform and network to promote Saskatchewan through various mediums like events such as these, website on an ongoing basis, taking an Indian delegation to Saskatchewan. He hoped that the province will join hand s with ICBC in promoting and marketing itself a bit more aggressively. This was very well received by all stakeholders.

Education Round Table organized by ICBC on June 7th with Government of Saskatchewan at the Canadian High Commission, New Delhi Education round table was facilitated by the Indo Canadian Business Chamber. Top educationists like Dr. Shyama Chona, Ms. Pervin Malhotra, principals from secondary and post secondary institutions were invited. There were Vice Chancellors of private universities also present.

The Canadian delegation was led by Honorable Minister Rod Norris who is Minister responsible for Advance Education, Employment and Labour. He was joined by deputy minister Ms. Clare Isman, his chief of staff Ms. Mary Donlery Konkin and Mr. Rupen Pandya, Assistant Deputy Minister of Immigration.

The program began with a welcome note by Ms. Hazel Siromoni, CEO, ICBC. This was followed by opening remarks by HE Mr. Joseph Caron who introduced the Minister to the audience and about the province Saskatchewan.

The Honorable Minister spoke on the high quality of Saskatchewan’s education system, its strengths and opportunities for international students.

He shared about his initiatives like formation of International Education Council whose mandate is to take care of international student’s interest and promotion of Saskatchewan as destination for. Yet another key point highlighted that Government of Saskatchewan offers health care to international students and they do not have to purchase another plan from the universities/institutions they enroll in Saskatchewan.

Minister’s presentation was very enlightening and informative about province of Saskatchewan. This was followed by each of three institutions making a brief presentation on their institution strengths, programs, research capabilities, engagement with India etc.

The three institutions were University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina and Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology.

After hearing the Canada story on province of Saskatchewan there were brief presentations about Indian education system and the current legal framework and what Indian students and parents are looking for. The presentation was made by Mr. Amitabh Jhingan, Partner, Ernst and Young and Ms. Pervin Malhora, Career counselor, columnist on education and career guidance for several newspapers and publications. She is very often also seen on television giving information about what and how should students be planning for their future education and life in general.

The very engaging, dynamic, energetic morning of presentations and discussions came to a close with a formal vote of thanks followed by lunch at Club Canada.

Farewell to Canadian High Commissioner HE Mr. Joseph Caron on June 3rd 2010 by Indo Canadian Business Chamber at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

The Chambers members and board had hosted a farewell lunch for the High Commissioner Mr. Joseph Caron. Ms. Hazel Siromoni, CEO, ICBC welcomed all the members, guests invited to the special afternoon. She said that such moments at events like these are always with mixed feelings. She also announced on behalf of the Board of ICBC on expression of interest to collaborate and work with ICCC in India to promote Canada – India relationship through promotion of business opportunities, trade opportunities, Government to Government agreements, building people to people relationships etc.

The High Commissioner was invited to make a few comments and to share his experience in India. He definitely reinforced the fact that Canada is very keen like the rest of the world to engage with India. He did highlight that in his two years his job was not only to lobby for this relationship and opportunity in India but also promote India in Canada to Canadian government, business and interests to engage with India more strategically and meaningfully.

He takes back very rich experiences and memories of India and Indian people. He did challenge ICBC to playing a greater role in lobbying towards strengthening of this relationship through its members, influencing different stake holders for example in signing of the agreements between India and Canada which are still pending in the area of trade, nuclear cooperation etc. He did commend the initiatives it has been taking and also its vision of working collaboratively with other chambers.

He thanked the chamber for hosting the farewell lunch.

Following High Commissioner Comments Mr. ManMohan Bhagat, Past President, Board member, mentor and guide was invited to respond to the High Commissioner comments with a few remarks on behalf of ICBC.

He assured the High Commissioner and Mario St. Marie, Minister Counsellor, Commercial, Canadian High Commission of the role that ICBC intends to play.

He praised the High Commissioner Temperament and attitude towards people and being very down to earth. He also placed on record the gentleness and kind hospitality that Mrs. Caron has shown during her stay in India. He wished them the very best on behalf of the ICBC members and board.

As a token of appreciation and acknowledgment of the High Commissioner’s huge contributions towards fostering and strengthening the relationship between India and Canada a book on “Making of New Delhi” was gifted by ICBC. It was handed by Mr. Rakesh Nangia, Treasure and Board member of ICBC as well as Mr. Man Mohan Bhagat.

Ms. Hazel Siromoni concluded the formal part of the event by thanking everybody for taking time out in joining to felicitate the High Commissioner.

All were invited for a buffet lunch served.

ICBC and Atlantic Canada India Mission April 2010 ICBC took the initiative with EduNova to facilitate their “India mission” from Atlantic Canada. EduNova is a co-operative industry association of education and training providers in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The India mission was taken on by the Atlantic Canadian Universities to three cities Delhi, Dehradun and Bangalore. The delegation comprised of the following Universities:

1. Acadia University
2. Dalhousie University
3. Memorial University of Newfoundland
4. Nova Scotia Agriculture University
5. University College of Cape Breton
6. University of King’s College
7. University of New Brunswick

The schedule comprised of visits to Indian and International secondary schools meeting with students (10-12th grade) and school counselors and principals. In each city Atlantic Canadian Universities hosted a Hi tea/dinner for the school counselors, principals and educationists.

Ms. Hazel Siromoni, CEO, ICBC travelled with the Atlantic Canadian Universities.

“Talent Development in a High Growth Economy" A networking event with Richard Ivey Business School, ICBC and CHC, New Delhi Indo Canada Business Chamber (ICBC) in Association with Richard Ivey Business School, London, Canada & Canadian High Commission organized an event on 26th October 2009 at Jacaranda Hall, Habitat, New Delhi.

The event’s theme was on: “Talent Development in a High Growth Economy" Ms. Ritika Modi, Chairperson, ICBC (Northern Region) welcomed His Excellency Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Caron, Ivey delegation, Key speakers Mr. Bikchandani and Mr. Vijay Singh, ICBC members, ICBC board members and the invited guests.

The evening was set pace on very charged note by the opening remarks delivered by the Canadian High Commissioner, His Excellency Mr. Joseph Caron on Human Capital Development: Emerging Opportunities for Canada-India Collaboration.

His remarks were followed by two very dynamic speakers on how businesses in India have managed the challenge of talent development by Mr Sanjeev Bikchandani, COO, Naukri.com and Mr. Vijay Singh, Managing Director, Sun Life India Service Centre.

As a closing to the event we had a presentation on Specific ways Ivey has managed the talent development over the past 90 years and some lessons learned and also remaining challenges, by Dean Carol Stephenson Ivey is a world leader in practical international management research and the development of innovative learning materials. At the end there was a very engaging dialogue and interaction between the audience, Dean Carol Stephenson and the guest speakers.

One of our first of “Face to Face” series we had with Mr. David Manicom, Minister Counsellor (Immigration),On “Myths and Reality around Canadian Visas” Organized by ICBC jointly with CHC; 1st October from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Club Canada, Canadian High Commission, New Delhi. We had a good turn out of members and potential members of ICBC who were either engaged in a business that found the session relevant and informative or wanted to understand visa related procedures for travel made by their company when travelling on business to Canada.
